Prof. Kurt Schmid has passed away – Vienna bids farewell to a musical legend

It is with great sorrow that the Vienna Music Seminar announces the passing of its president, Prof. Kurt Schmid, who died on the night of May 8, 2025. Until the very end, he fought bravely against a serious illness. He leaves behind a musical legacy that has shaped generations of artists.

Born in 1942 into a family of musicians, the clarinetist, conductor, and composer was an exceptional figure in Austrian musical life. After studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, he served for over 40 years as principal clarinetist of the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria. At the same time, he was active as a chamber musician, composer (with over 750 works), and educator.

Among his compositional highlights were the ballet Die Feuerblume (MuseumsQuartier Vienna, 2007) and the oratorio Ode to Life (Wiener Konzerthaus, 2011). Especially dear to his heart was the support of young musicians: from 1974 onwards, he taught at the Vienna Music Seminar, becoming its president in 2020.

He was also well known for his close ties to Ukraine. Even during the war, he accompanied the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luhansk on their flight from the conflict – up to their evacuation near Lviv. “Music can give hope – especially in difficult times,” Schmid once said.

Numerous honors – including the AProf. Kurt Schmid has passed away – Vienna bids farewell to a musical legendustrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class – recognized his life’s work. Yet his greatest reward was the deep appreciation of his students, orchestra colleagues, and audiences worldwide.

With Kurt Schmid, the Vienna Music Seminar has lost a charismatic teacher, an artistic visionary, and a tireless supporter of young talent.
