History of Wiener Musikseminar

The association "Wiener Musikseminar" was founded in 1970 by Prof. Dr. Josef Dichler, one of the most renowned professors for piano at what was then the Vienna Academy of Music (now the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) and the Japanese singer Kimiko Sato. Foreign music students should be given the opportunity (at that time in Vienna for the first time!) to perfect their studies with internationally recognized professors during the summer holidays and to get to know the special interpretation of the so-called "Wiener Schule".

From cautious beginnings, the Wiener Musikseminar has developed over the past 50 years into an institution that has become an indispensable part of the Austrian music scene. Today around 300 students from up to 41 countries around the world take part in the master classes of the Wiener Musikseminar. The range of courses now includes the subjects piano, voice, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone and chamber music. The conducting courses are also very popular, as the best graduates have the opportunity to apply their experiences in direct work with an orchestra.

As part of the summer courses, the Vienna Music Seminar annually organizes the Prof. Dr. Dichler competitions with the chance for award winners to present themselves in public concerts. Concerts and excursions to the memorials of important Austrian composers are also part of the seminar.
