Alexander Arenkow

Professor Alexander Arenkow was born in Soviet Union and studied at the Moscow Conservatory as a student of David Oistrach. After receiving his diploma Alexander Arenkow continued his studies with David Oistrach for four more years. He was awarded prizes in the All Soviet Union Competition of for Violin and in the Wieniawski Competition.

In 1967 he founded the Glinka String Quartet which went on to first prize in the International Competition in Liege (Belgium). Alexander Arenkow was the first violinist of this world famous quartet.

Alexander Arenkow performed many concerts and made recordings with the Glinka Quartet in the Soviet Union and in numerous European countries. He performed with composers Schostakowitsch, Chachaturian, Schnittke, Zinzadse, Levitin and others.

The Glinka Quartet had a long and intensive cooperation with Dmitry Shostakowitsch. The last string quartets (13, 14 and 15) where eloboratet in an intensive personal contact with the composer. His string quartet nr. 13 was performed for the first time in Europe in a concert in London in presence of the composer.

Alexander Arenkow emigrated from USSR in 1981 and was invited in the Vienna Conservatory to lead a Violin class.

Alexander Arenkow lead also different Master classes in Austria, Sweden, Japan and South Corea. He played also chamber music concerts and violin recitals in different countries.

Alexander Arenkow took part in Jury of different international competitions in Italy, Spain, Kazachstan etc.

Among his pupils are laureate of international competitions in Barcelona, Munich (ARD), Florence, Zagreb as well as concertmasters in orchestras, such as Vienna Volksoper, Tonkünstler (Austria), Tokio and Stockholm Royal Symphony, Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome and others.

In the 1999 Alexander Arenkow was awarded by the President Austria with the honourable title “Professor”. http://alexanderarenkow.com/
